A useful counter must explain what it counts. JavaScript string length measures UTF-16 code units, which can treat one visible emoji as two positions and split combined characters in surprising ways. This tool uses the browser's Unicode segmenter when available to count word-like segments and grapheme clusters closer to what a reader sees. It also reports characters excluding whitespace, code-independent lines, sentence segments, UTF-8 bytes, and a simple reading-time estimate. Counts update immediately while you type, with no button, account, or upload. The text remains in the browser and is limited to one million characters for predictable interaction.
Work through the input
- Words are counted using language-aware Unicode segmentation when the browser provides it. This handles many scripts that do not rely on ASCII letters alone. The fallback recognizes Unicode letters and numbers, including common apostrophes inside words.
- Characters represent grapheme clusters where possible. A grapheme may contain multiple Unicode code points, such as an accented letter assembled from a base and combining mark or an emoji joined from several symbols. This better matches visible editing limits than UTF-16 length.
- The no-spaces count removes Unicode whitespace. Lines are separated by Windows, Unix, or old Mac newline sequences. An empty input has zero lines, while text without a newline has one line.
- UTF-8 bytes show storage or request size for plain text before protocol overhead. Non-ASCII characters often require multiple bytes, so byte count can exceed visible character count even when the text looks short.
- Reading time divides the word count by 200 and rounds upward to whole minutes. It is a planning estimate, not a promise: technical notation, language, formatting, and reader familiarity can change actual speed substantially.

- Different editors and publishing platforms may define words differently around hyphens, contractions, URLs, hashtags, and East Asian scripts. Use the destination platform's own counter for a hard submission limit when it is available.
- Sentence segmentation is linguistic rather than semantic. Abbreviations, initials, decimal numbers, and headings without punctuation can influence the total. The figure is useful for orientation, not formal grammar analysis.
- UTF-8 bytes measure only the text entered. A JSON request adds quotes, escaping, property names, and headers; an HTML page adds markup; a database may use another encoding or compression.
Questions about Word and Character Counter
Are spaces included in the character count?
The Characters value includes them, while No spaces removes all Unicode whitespace so both common interpretations are available.
Why are bytes higher than characters?
UTF-8 represents many international characters and emoji with multiple bytes even though a reader sees one character.
How is reading time calculated?
It uses 200 words per minute and rounds up. It is a rough editorial estimate rather than measured behavior.
Does the page store my text?
