Shape and export choices
- Select a source that is in focus and large enough for the display. A 400-pixel export can be made from a smaller image, but interpolation cannot restore details that the source never captured.
- Compare cover with contain before downloading. In cover mode a 3:2 landscape image becomes a 600 by 400 scaled image with 100 pixels trimmed from each side to make the square. In contain mode the full scene fits within the square with background space.
- After exporting, check the downloaded image is 400 by 400 pixels and read its actual file type. Preview it in the receiving profile or catalogue layout because that layout may apply another crop or circular mask.
Good fits for Resize Image to 400×400
Keep the entire product visible
An 1800 by 1200 product photograph scales to 600 by 400 in cover mode, losing 100 output pixels on each side of a centred square. If the full product stretches across the original frame, use contain or adjust the crop so no required part is cut off.
Enlarging a small avatar
A 200 by 200 avatar enlarged to 400 by 400 contains four times as many output pixels, but it does not gain four times the information. Edges can look softer. Prefer a larger original if the profile will be displayed prominently or zoomed.
Check the image before download
- The 400-pixel canvas is a dimension, not a promise that a face or product is sharp. A blurred 200-pixel source enlarged to 400 remains blurred. Use the original photograph when available and compare important detail at intended display size.
- Cover can exclude packaging, hands or other context at the sides of a wide photo. Contain retains that context but makes the subject smaller. Select the mode that preserves the information required by the destination.
- A 400 by 400 image can have different byte sizes depending on format and content. A strict form may impose an independent size ceiling or prohibit a transparent background. Inspect dimensions, file type, byte count and final crop separately before submitting.
Questions about Resize Image to 400×400
Does cover stretch the picture?
Cover keeps the source proportions and trims overflow. Contain also keeps proportions but leaves background space. Neither choice needs to distort a circle into an ellipse to fill the square.
How should I check the downloaded image?
Confirm 400 by 400 pixels in the saved file's properties, then view it at the destination's intended size. Check the outer edges, small details and format before replacing an existing asset.
