About Paint Calculator

A paint calculator estimates how many gallons a job needs from the wall dimensions, the number of coats and the paint's coverage rate. Buying paint is a guessing game otherwise - one gallon short means a second trip and a possible dye-lot mismatch, one too many means a shelf of leftover tins. Enter the wall size, coats and coverage, and the gallons needed appear instantly, rounded up to what you would actually buy. Running out of paint partway up a wall is worse than it sounds: a fresh tin, even the same colour, can differ in shade enough to show as a band in the wrong light, so the safe move is buying enough at once from the same batch. This calculator estimates the gallons from wall area, coats and the coverage rate printed on the tin, then rounds up to whole tins because you cannot buy a third of a gallon. It uses plain wall area, so for a close figure subtract large windows and doors and add a little for heavily textured surfaces, which drink noticeably more than smooth drywall. Primer often has a different coverage rate, so run it as a separate calculation.

Using Paint Calculator

  1. Enter the total wall length and height in feet.
  2. Enter the number of coats and the coverage per gallon (usually printed on the tin).
  3. The paint needed, and the amount rounded up to buy, update as you type.

Where paint calculator helps

Painting a room

40 feet of wall at 8 feet high, two coats at 350 ft²/gallon, needs about 1.8 gallons - buy 2.

Priming first

Run it again for the primer coat, which may have a different coverage rate.

Keep coats separate from surface area

A second coat doubles the area to be covered with paint, not the physical wall area. Enter the wall measurements once and use the coat count for repeated coverage. Primer and finish can have different coverage rates; estimate each product separately using its label.

Questions about Paint Calculator

How much paint do I need?

Multiply wall area by coats and divide by the coverage rate. The tool rounds up to whole gallons to buy.

Should I subtract windows?

For a closer figure, yes. The tool uses plain wall area; deduct large openings and add for texture.
