Use Litres to Gallons

Converts litres to us gallons in this tab, with nothing sent anywhere.

Runs entirely on your deviceThe conversion happens in this browser tab. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged or stored, which is worth knowing for anything you would not paste into a search box.

A 50-litre tank is approximately 13.21 US gallons. This page deliberately uses the US measure; the same tank is about 11 Imperial gallons, which explains why UK and US fuel-economy figures cannot be compared directly.

About Litres to Gallons

Litres measure fuel, drinks and containers across the metric world, while the US buys petrol and milk by the gallon. Converting litres to US gallons lets you read a metric volume the American way - a fuel fill, a water tank, a drink container. One litre is 0.2642 US gallons, so a 50-litre tank holds about 13.2 gallons, the figure a US driver would recognise at the pump. Fuel economy is the usual driver: a car rated in litres per 100 km means little to a US buyer until the tank size is seen in the gallons a US pump dispenses. Home-brewing kits from the US specify gallons, so a metric brewer converts a litre batch size to check it against the fermenter and the recipe's yield. Fuel economy expressed as distance per gallon also needs a matching US or imperial gallon definition.

Using Litres to Gallons

  1. Type a number of L. You can paste a value with its unit; the tool reads the number.
  2. The exact factor is applied and the result is shown as US gal, updating live as you type.
  3. Copy the answer, or switch to the reverse converter to go from US gal back to L.

Where litres to gallons helps

Liters to gallons formula

Divide litres by 3.785411784 to get US liquid gallons. This tool multiplies by the rounded equivalent 0.2641720524. A 20 litre container therefore holds approximately 5.2834 US gallons. Liters and litres are different spellings of the same unit.

Common litre conversions

1 litre = 0.2642 US gallons; 5 litres = 1.3209 US gallons; 10 litres = 2.6417 US gallons; 50 litres = 13.2086 US gallons; 100 litres = 26.4172 US gallons. Keep more precision for calculations and round the final result to suit your container markings.

US gallons versus Imperial gallons

This page returns US liquid gallons only. For Imperial gallons, divide litres by 4.54609 instead. A 50 litre tank is approximately 13.21 US gallons but 11.00 Imperial gallons. The same physical capacity produces a different number because an Imperial gallon is larger.

Tank capacity and usable volume

A container's nominal capacity may exceed the volume you can use when headspace is required. Convert the actual fill volume if you are measuring a batch. This page converts volume; it does not infer tank dimensions, safe fill levels or liquid weight. Litres per 100 kilometres is a fuel-consumption ratio and needs a different calculation.
