Browse all general convertersUS recipes measure liquids and loose ingredients in cups, but a metric kitchen uses millilitres on a jug or scale. Converting cups to millilitres lets a metric cook follow an American recipe precisely rather than guessing. Using the US legal cup of 240 millilitres, one cup is 240 ml, half a cup 120 ml, and a quarter-cup 60 ml - the figures a metric measuring jug actually shows. Baking especially rewards the switch, since weighing or measuring 240 ml is far more repeatable than packing a dry ingredient into a cup, where how firmly you press changes the amount. Cocktail recipes scaled for a crowd are easier in millilitres, so converting the cups a US guide lists lets you batch a drink precisely in a metric jug. A cup is a volume measure; converting it to millilitres does not determine the weight of flour or another ingredient.

Using this tool's 240 ml cup, three quarters of a cup is 180 ml and one third is 80 ml. A recipe written for a 250 ml metric cup would give 187.5 ml and about 83.33 ml instead. Check the recipe's measurement convention before scaling every ingredient. This converts volume; it cannot convert cups of flour to grams without a separate density assumption.
This tool uses the US legal cup of 240 ml. Note other standards differ - a US customary cup is about 237 ml and a metric cup is 250 ml.
