Convert a mass stated in pounds into kilograms for a parcel label, weight log or equipment specification. The formula is kilograms = pounds multiplied by 0.45359237. That is the exact definition of the international avoirdupois pound; the calculator displays the result rounded to at most four decimal places. For example, 1 lb becomes 0.4536 kg on screen even though the conversion factor contains more digits. Start with the measured mass, not a rounded estimate, when a receiving form has a strict limit. This page converts mass only: it does not calculate shipping prices, interpret a medicine dose, or determine whether a parcel meets a carrier's rules. The arithmetic runs locally in the browser. 50 lb converts to 22.6796 kg on screen. It is not exactly 23 kg. Compare that converted mass with the allowance for your actual ticket, including the bag itself, rather than assuming pound and kilogram limits are interchangeable.

Convert ounces within a mixed weight first

For a parcel marked 5 lb 8 oz, convert 8/16 to 0.5 lb and enter 5.5. The result is about 2.4948 kg. Entering 5.8 would mean 5 lb 12.8 oz and overstate the mass. Check whether a carrier uses actual or volumetric weight before using the number to predict a shipping charge; this tool only converts the actual mass.

Before you use the result

Only the first numeric value is converted. A line such as 5 lb 8 oz is not parsed as a mixed weight, and 5 + 8 is not evaluated as an expression. Enter 5.5 for five pounds and eight ounces.
The parser removes commas, treating them as digit separators. Use a decimal point for a fractional pound: 5,5 is read as 55, not 5.5. For a batch of weights, convert each value separately.
Four-decimal display rounding can hide a small difference around a strict weight ceiling. A scale reading has its own precision, and a carrier can round billable mass separately. Leave an appropriate margin rather than treating a rounded screen value as proof of acceptance.
This converter uses ordinary pounds of mass, not pound-force or troy pounds used with precious metals. Negative input is accepted mathematically but does not describe a physical parcel mass. Check the source unit before relying on a result.
