About Compress Image to 20KB

Twenty kilobytes is not a normal web-photo target; it is a constraint imposed by old or highly restrictive upload systems. At this size, the useful question is not whether compression is lossless. It cannot be. The useful question is how to allocate a tiny byte budget between recognizable detail, clean edges, and enough dimensions for the receiving form. This tool starts from the original image, produces JPEG output, and tests combinations of quality and dimensions until it finds the largest practical result under the ceiling. Because a 20KB file may contain a face, signature, or application document, processing is deliberately local. The source is read by the browser and never transmitted to an image-processing server.

Shape and export choices

  1. The image is decoded with its visible orientation and drawn onto a fresh canvas. This also removes metadata that would otherwise consume part of the 20KB allowance without improving the visible result.
  2. A quality search tests high and low JPEG settings while keeping the original aspect ratio. The engine records compliant candidates rather than assuming that a particular quality number always maps to a predictable file size.
  3. If quality alone is insufficient, a second binary search reduces dimensions. The goal is to retain the largest pixel area that can still be encoded below the requested limit.
  4. After the dimension search identifies a viable size, quality is searched again at those dimensions. This avoids the common failure where a compressor shrinks the picture much further than necessary.
  5. The result panel reports the generated file's real bytes and dimensions. The same measured Blob is used for the preview and download.

Good fits for Compress Image to 20KB

Signature for an application form

A tightly cropped dark signature on clean white paper is a realistic 20KB job because most pixels are uniform. Remove surrounding paper before processing and inspect thin strokes after conversion.

ID portrait with excessive background

A phone portrait may need both a crop and reduced dimensions. Centering the head and shoulders before compression preserves more facial information than asking the encoder to describe a large empty background.

Questions about Compress Image to 20KB

Can an image still look good at 20KB?

Yes for small portraits, signatures, and simple graphics, but not at full phone-camera dimensions. A useful result normally requires a tight crop and fewer pixels.

Why does the result use JPG?

JPEG offers a controllable quality setting and is efficient for photographs. PNG is lossless and often cannot fit photographic content into 20KB without a much larger reduction in dimensions.

Will metadata be removed?

Yes. Drawing and re-encoding creates a new image without the original EXIF block, including camera information and embedded GPS fields.
