Use Circle Crop Image

Position a true circular mask at full source resolution. Transparent PNG keeps the corners clear; no upload request is made.

A real circular filePNG and WebP make pixels outside the circle transparent, so the image appears round wherever transparency is supported. JPG cannot be transparent and uses white corners.

Automated crop checks verify that the circular selection stays inside the source image, remains square, cannot collapse below the usable minimum, and maps to the source pixels used for export.

About Circle Crop Image

A circle crop is not merely a square picture displayed with rounded CSS. The file itself needs transparent pixels outside the circle, otherwise the corners return as soon as the image is placed in a document, presentation, profile system, or design editor that does not apply the same styling. This tool creates the real masked image. Choose a photo, move and resize the circular selection over the subject, then export a PNG or WebP whose corner pixels are transparent. The selection is measured against the source photograph rather than the smaller preview, so the downloaded circle keeps the full detail inside the chosen area. A JPG option is available for systems that refuse transparent formats, with the limitation stated plainly: JPEG uses white square corners because that format cannot record transparency. Decoding, positioning, masking, encoding, and download creation all happen on the current device.

Shape and export choices

  1. Choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP image. The browser reads its real pixel dimensions and applies the orientation written by a phone camera, so a portrait photo appears upright and the selection maps to the pixels that will be exported.
  2. Move the circle over the subject by dragging inside it. Drag a corner handle to make the circle larger or smaller. The selection stays square beneath the circular guide and cannot be pushed beyond the edge of the photograph, which prevents empty wedges appearing in the output.
  3. Choose the corner treatment. Transparent PNG is the safest option for profile pictures, logos, headshots, and product cut-outs because only the circular area remains visible. Transparent WebP usually produces a smaller file. White JPG works for an upload form that accepts only JPEG, but the file remains square with white pixels outside the circle.
  4. Select Crop circle. The tool creates a canvas at the selected source resolution, clips drawing to an exact circular path, and encodes the result locally. The on-screen preview may be smaller to fit the page, but the saved image uses the original selection dimensions.
  5. Inspect the resulting pixel dimensions and file size, then download it. Re-encoding intentionally leaves behind camera metadata such as GPS position, capture time, and device model. Keep the original photograph separately when that information matters.

Good fits for Circle Crop Image

A transparent profile picture

Centre the face with a little space above the hair and below the chin, then export PNG. The transparent corners let the picture sit naturally on light, dark, or coloured profile backgrounds.

A round team headshot

Crop several staff photos with similar face scale and circle size. The matching geometry produces a consistent directory or About page without sending employee photographs through a remote editing service.

A circular logo or product badge

Position the full mark inside the guide and choose transparent WebP when the publishing system supports it. The outside becomes truly clear instead of merely matching the current page background.

Questions about Circle Crop Image

Is the downloaded image really circular?

With PNG or WebP, yes: pixels outside the circle are transparent, so only the circular image is visible. The file still has square pixel dimensions because every raster file has a rectangular canvas, but the corners contain no visible pixels.

Why does the JPG version have white corners?

JPEG has no alpha channel and cannot store transparent pixels. The tool fills the area outside the circle with white rather than allowing browsers to encode it as black. Use PNG or WebP for true transparency.

Does circle cropping reduce image quality?

The selected region is read at its original resolution. PNG preserves those pixels losslessly; WebP and JPG use their usual encoding. The crop removes pixels outside the circle but does not resize what remains.

Does Shard Tools store my profile photo?

No. The browser decodes the selected file, applies the circular mask, and creates a temporary download URL locally. No image is uploaded to Shard Tools.
