HEIC stores photographs efficiently, but many forms, editors, messaging systems, and older applications still request JPEG. The incompatibility often appears at the worst moment: the photo opens correctly on an iPhone but is rejected by a desktop upload field. This converter decodes HEIC or HEIF in the browser and creates a conventional JPG with a white background where transparency is present. The HEIC decoder is loaded only on this route after it is needed, so unrelated Shard Tools pages do not download its code. More importantly, the photo is processed on the device. It is not sent to a conversion server, which is valuable for identity documents and personal camera images.
Shape and export choices
- The selected file is checked by its extension or media type and passed to a browser-compatible HEIC decoder that runs locally through JavaScript and WebAssembly-style compiled code.
- The decoded frame becomes an in-memory bitmap. The browser draws that bitmap onto a new canvas while preserving its pixel width, height, and visible orientation.
- The canvas is encoded as a high-quality JPEG. JPEG is broadly supported by browsers, office applications, upload portals, and image editors, but it does not retain HEIC's storage efficiency.
- A new Blob is created for the JPG and exposed through a temporary object URL. The result panel measures that Blob and uses it for both preview and download.
- The conversion route is intentionally single-file. This keeps memory use predictable on phones and prevents a large camera roll from freezing the page.

Opening a photo in older software
JPEG is a practical interchange copy for an application that lacks HEIC support. Preserve the HEIC original because it may contain metadata and auxiliary camera information the JPG does not retain.
Check the image before download
- JPEG does not support transparency. If a HEIF image contains transparent pixels, they are placed on white in the output.
- Motion photos, depth maps, burst frames, and auxiliary images stored inside a HEIC container are not reproduced as separate assets. The tool converts the primary readable image.
- Metadata is not copied. Capture time, camera model, lens information, GPS coordinates, and editing history may be absent from the JPG. Keep the original HEIC as your archival copy.
- A JPEG can be larger than the HEIC source because the formats use different compression technology. Conversion improves compatibility, not necessarily file size.
- Very large HEIC files require substantial memory while decoded. Close other heavy tabs if a phone or older computer reports an allocation or decoding error.
Questions about HEIC to JPG
Why is the JPG larger than the HEIC?
HEIC generally achieves better compression than JPEG at similar visual quality. The purpose of conversion is compatibility, so a larger result is possible and normal.
Does the converter keep Live Photo motion?
No. It converts the primary still image. Motion components, depth information, and auxiliary frames are not included in the JPEG output.
Can I delete the original HEIC afterward?
Keep it when the photo matters. The original may contain higher-efficiency pixels and metadata that are deliberately not copied into this privacy-focused JPG.
