A mechanical output of 1,000 watts is about 1.34 horsepower. Nameplate electrical input and shaft output are different quantities because a motor loses energy as heat, so compare ratings from the same side of the machine.

About Watts to Horsepower

This calculator converts watts to mechanical horsepower for comparing engine and shaft-output ratings. It multiplies watts by 0.0013410221, a rounded representation of the conversion factor, and displays up to five decimal places. One mechanical horsepower is approximately 745.7 watts. This is a change of units only: it does not estimate motor efficiency, infer shaft power from electrical consumption, or turn a battery's energy capacity into a power rating. Check the quantity and horsepower convention on each specification before comparing equipment. Two ratings expressed in hp can still describe different operating conditions, such as peak output versus sustained output.

Using Watts to Horsepower

  1. Enter one value in watts. For kilowatts, multiply by 1000 first: enter 2200 for 2.2 kW. Unit labels are not automatically interpreted.
  2. The rounded mechanical-horsepower factor is applied and the result is shown as hp, updating live as you type.
  3. Copy the answer, or switch to the reverse converter to go from hp back to W.

Where watts to horsepower helps

A 2.2 kW shaft rating

Convert 2.2 kW to 2200 W first. Entering 2200 gives 2.95025 mechanical hp. Entering 2.2 would give a result one thousand times too small because the input is in watts.

Electrical input versus useful output

For a hypothetical motor drawing 1000 W at a stated 80% efficiency, shaft output is 800 W. Converting 800 gives about 1.07282 hp of shaft power. Converting the 1000 W input gives 1.34102 hp, but that is not the shaft rating. The calculator does not assume efficiency for you.
