JSON Formatter and Validator

Format, minify, and validate JSON locally in your browser.

Browser-local JSON tool

Use JSON Formatter and Validator

Formatting and validation happen in memory on this device. Input is limited to two million characters.

During the latest release check, a JSON sample was formatted in the browser and its structure remained valid after the transformation. The input stayed in the tab throughout the check.

About JSON Formatter and Validator

Raw JSON is compact enough for machines and often miserable for people. One missing quote or trailing comma can turn a configuration file, webhook body, or API response into an opaque error. This formatter parses the text with the browser's native JSON implementation, then prints a consistent two-space or four-space view. It can also minify a formatted document or validate it without changing the underlying values. The result includes a small structural summary so you can distinguish an object from an array, see how deeply values are nested, and estimate whether the payload has the shape you expected. Everything stays in the current browser tab; the input is never posted to a formatting service.

Work through the input

  1. Paste a complete JSON value into the input. A document may begin with an object, array, string, number, boolean, or null. Objects and arrays are common for APIs, but the JSON grammar permits all of these roots. Blank input is rejected instead of being mistaken for an empty object.
  2. Format parses the entire document before printing it. That matters because a text replacement tool can add line breaks to invalid data and make it look trustworthy. Here, no formatted output is produced unless the browser successfully constructs the value. Choose two spaces for compact code reviews or four spaces when wider indentation makes a deeply nested payload easier to scan.
  3. Validate uses the same strict parser and reports the root type, key count, primitive value count, and maximum nesting depth. Object keys are counted wherever they appear. Array positions are not keys, while strings, numbers, booleans, and null values count as leaf values. These diagnostics do not change the input and are intended as a quick shape check rather than a schema test.
  4. Minify removes insignificant whitespace by parsing and serializing the value again. Spaces inside quoted strings are data and remain untouched. The operation can reduce a configuration snippet or request body, but it does not compress the text with gzip and it does not reorder object properties.
  5. Copy places the processed result on the local clipboard, while Download JSON creates a temporary file directly in the browser. The page accepts up to two million characters to keep editing and parsing predictable on ordinary phones and laptops. Larger datasets are better handled with a streaming command-line parser rather than a browser textarea.

When json formatter and validator is useful

Diagnosing a failed API request

A copied request body may look correct in one long line while containing a trailing comma after the last property. Validation stops at the syntax error; after removing the comma, formatting separates nested headers and items so the request shape can be compared with the API documentation.

Reviewing a feature flag file

A minified flag export can be expanded with four-space indentation, then checked for an unexpectedly deep branch or an array root where the loader expects an object. Download the formatted result only after confirming that property order is not significant to the consuming system.

Questions about JSON Formatter and Validator

Does this JSON formatter upload my data?

No. Parsing, formatting, minifying, counting, copying, and file creation happen in browser memory. This tool does not call an API with your JSON. You can confirm that in the browser Network panel.

Why is my JavaScript object rejected as invalid JSON?

JavaScript object literal syntax is broader than JSON. JSON requires double quotes around every object key and string, forbids comments and trailing commas, and has no undefined value. Convert those language-specific features before sending the value to a JSON API.

Does formatting change the data or sort my keys?

Formatting changes only insignificant whitespace created by serialization. It does not alphabetically sort properties. As with any parse-and-serialize operation, numeric values use JavaScript number semantics, so extremely large unquoted integers deserve special care.

Can this tool validate against a JSON Schema?

Not yet. This page validates JSON syntax and reports structural counts; it does not know your domain contract. Schema validation is a distinct intent that should become its own tool only when the implementation can load a schema locally and return precise paths for every violation.
