About GeoJSON to CSV

GeoJSON is the format mapping tools speak - a structured way to describe geographic features and their properties - but to analyse location data in a spreadsheet, join it to other records, or feed it into a tool that expects a table, you need it flattened into rows. This converts the point features of a GeoJSON document into CSV, with a longitude and latitude column and a column for each property the features carry. It gathers the union of properties across all features, so a field present on only some of them still gets a column, and every point lands in a tidy table. Location traces and datasets can be sensitive - where people or assets are - so like the other interchange tools, this runs entirely in your browser.

Work through the input

  1. The GeoJSON is parsed and its feature collection read.
  2. The properties across all features are gathered, so a field on only some features still becomes a column.
  3. Each point feature becomes a row, leading with its longitude and latitude.
  4. The remaining columns are filled from each feature's properties, blank where a feature lacks one.
  5. Values containing commas or quotes are escaped so the CSV stays valid.

When geojson to csv is useful

Analysing location data

Convert a GeoJSON of points to CSV and open it in a spreadsheet to sort, filter or join the locations to other data.

Preparing points for import

A tool that takes CSV but not GeoJSON accepts the flattened table, with coordinates and properties in columns.

Questions about GeoJSON to CSV

Does it handle lines and polygons?

No. It flattens point features. Lines and polygons have many coordinates and do not fit a single lat/lon row.

What order are the coordinates?

Longitude then latitude, matching GeoJSON. Note that is the reverse of the common spoken 'lat, long'.

What happens to properties?

Each becomes a column, gathered across all features so partial fields are still included.

What about nested property values?

They are written as JSON text, since a CSV cell is flat.
