About CSV to Markdown Table

A CSV export is useful for spreadsheets but awkward to paste into a README or issue. This converter reads its header and rows, then creates a Markdown table you can download as an .md file. Select several CSV files to get separate Markdown documents in a ZIP or merge their rows into one table; columns are aligned by heading. Switch direction to turn simple Markdown tables back into CSV. It parses quoted commas and doubled quotes before formatting cells. A literal pipe in a value is escaped so it cannot create an extra column. Markdown is for readable documentation, not a guaranteed lossless replacement for the original CSV.

Work through the input

Paste CSV with a header row. The first row becomes the Markdown column headings, and later rows become table rows.
Quoted commas remain part of a field. Blank cells and short rows are retained as empty Markdown cells.
The output adds the Markdown separator row required by common renderers. Copy it into a document or download the .md file.
Pipes are escaped, and line breaks inside a field become HTML break tags so the Markdown row remains on one line.
For a batch, each source produces its own converted file. The merged download aligns columns by name and leaves missing values blank.

Markdown table syntax is not a lossless CSV format. Converted line breaks display as HTML breaks only in renderers that permit inline HTML.
Very wide tables are hard to read on narrow screens; consider selecting fewer columns in the source CSV first.
The parser detects common delimiters, but ambiguous single-column input may need checking before you publish the result.
Text is processed in the browser with a two-million-character input limit. No CSV content is uploaded by this converter.
The reverse direction accepts simple pipe tables with a heading and dash separator row, not arbitrary Markdown documents or complex embedded formatting.

Questions about CSV to Markdown Table

What happens to a pipe in a CSV cell?

It receives a backslash escape so the Markdown renderer does not treat it as a column separator.

Can I turn the Markdown back into the exact CSV?

Not reliably. Markdown tables are presentation text; keep the original CSV if you need an editable source.

Does it need a header?

Yes. The first CSV row supplies the table headings, even when it contains only one column.
