Brick quantity formula
Calculate net wall area as length multiplied by height minus the combined area of openings. Multiply that area by the number of bricks covering one unit of area, then multiply by 1 plus the waste percentage divided by 100. Round up to a whole brick for the final estimate.
Worked wall with a doorway
A 20 by 8 foot wall has 160 square feet of gross area. A 3 by 7 foot door removes 21 square feet, leaving 139 square feet. At seven bricks per square foot, the base quantity is 973. Adding 10% waste gives 1070.3, so the estimate rounds up to 1071 bricks.
Choosing bricks per square metre
Coverage depends on the brick face and mortar joint. As an illustrative layout, a 200 by 60 mm face with 10 mm joints occupies a 210 by 70 mm module. Dividing 1,000,000 square millimetres by 14,700 gives about 68.03 bricks per square metre. Confirm actual coverage with your supplier; this example is not a universal brick size.
Ordering and construction limits
Calculate each wall face separately when heights or openings differ, then combine the quantities. A single face estimate does not automatically account for multiple leaves, piers, returns or decorative bonds. Supplier pack sizes may require rounding your order further. The result is a materials estimate, not a structural design or a check of the wall's load capacity.
